IT 121
IT 121 [Treaty 45 ½] is a manuscript original of an Upper Canada treaty negotiated on August 9, 1836, by Indian Superintendent T.G. Anderson and Lieutenant-Governor Sir Francis Bond Head, and representatives of the "Chippewas and Ottawa Indians." The Chippewa and Ottawa surrendered the Saugeen Peninsula, and were instructed by Bond Head to "remove themselves" to Manitoulin Island where "proper houses" would be built for them. This treaty is unique as it is the only one to contain a provision for housing. The Saugeen surrender was part of Bond Head's plan to relocate the "wandering Indians" of Upper Canada to lands north of Owen Sound and to Manitoulin Island. Bond Head altered the provisions of the treaty by hand before it was signed. Bond Head's notations are on the treaty document.
